Lake Geneva, Il. Gump! the statue and the end of the Gump Pilgrimage

Here you can see the Google street view of the Gump statue which overlooks Lake Geneva.

The statue was given to Sidney by the Chicago Trib and it looked over the lake there until his death.

The statue was moved t0 Flatiron Park after his death. It was torn down during a riot in the 60’s but it was fixed.

From Shirland it’s East forty miles to Harvard Illinois.

One Quarter Mile South of Harvard. the donut shop made good croissants and jellies and the coffee was mild and potable.

As near as I can tell this may be the location where Sidney Smith totaled his brand new Rolls while returning from a triumphant after signing party. He had just agreed to another five years of his runaway hit The Gumps.

I had a chance to retrace some of Sidney Smith’s steps this weekend. I’ll be posting pictures from the journey over the week.

We’ll begin with his farm in the tiny town of Shirland, Illinois.
